Honey Sweet F1 from MAGSEEDS is a hybrid sweet corn (Zea mays var. saccharata) bred for exceptional flavour. Its plump golden kernels are tender and juicy with a deep, honey-like sweetness, harvested young at the milk stage for crisp, fresh eating. This warm-season annual grass is wonderful grilled over coals, boiled on the cob, or stripped for salads and stews. The Arabic name ذرة (dhura) denotes maize; as a vegetable seed it is true sweet corn.
Sow seed about 2.5 cm deep, or slightly shallower at 1.9 to 2.5 cm for super-sweet types. Corn germinates best when the soil is near 15 C; never sow until soil at 10 cm depth reaches at least 10 C, while super-sweet kinds prefer about 18 C. In the Nile Delta, sow from mid-March through April and again from May into July, with late May ideal; in hot Upper Egypt a September sowing can outperform. Because corn is wind-pollinated, plant in a block of at least 4 short side-by-side rows for well-filled ears. Space plants 20 to 30 cm apart, with rows 76 to 91 cm apart, in full sun of 6 hours or more, ideally 8 to 10.
Sweet corn is a heavy nitrogen feeder. Start with a balanced 5-10-10 base, then side-dress with nitrogen when plants reach about 30 cm (knee-high) and again when tassels appear. A practical guide is calcium nitrate at roughly 1 kg per 30 m of row each month.
Give about 2.5 cm of water weekly from rain or irrigation, keeping moisture steady during tasseling, silking and ear filling. Ears ripen 17 to 24 days after the first silks show, once silks turn brown and a pierced kernel releases milky juice; most varieties mature in 63 to 100 days. Watch for corn earworm, European corn borer, aphids, flea beetles, cutworms and armyworms, plus corn smut and leaf rust.
