Yellow Corn Seeds 40g

Yellow Corn rewards the home gardener with rows of plump, glossy golden kernels carried on tender ears. As a true sweet corn (Zea mays var. saccharata), it is a warm-season annual grass grown for kernels harvested young at the milk stage, when they are at their sweetest and most tender. The bright golden colour and juicy crunch make it a favourite grilled over coals, boiled on the cob, or stripped fresh into salads, soups, and salsas.

Planting

Sweet corn loves warmth, so wait until soil at 10 cm depth reaches at least 10 C; germination is best near 15 C, with super-sweet types preferring around 18 C. Sow seed about 2.5 cm deep, spacing plants 20 to 30 cm apart in rows set 76 to 91 cm apart. Because corn is wind-pollinated, plant in a block of at least four short rows side by side rather than one long row, ensuring well-filled ears. Give it full sun, ideally 8 to 10 hours daily.

Fertilizing

Corn is a heavy nitrogen feeder. Start from a balanced 5-10-10 base, then side-dress with nitrogen when plants reach about 30 cm (knee-high) and again when the tassels appear. A practical approach is calcium nitrate at roughly 1 kg per 30 m of row applied monthly to keep growth vigorous.

Care

Provide about 2.5 cm of water each week from rain or irrigation, staying especially consistent during tasseling, silking, and ear filling. Watch for corn earworm, European corn borer, aphids, flea beetles, cutworms, and armyworms, plus diseases like corn smut and leaf rust. Ears are ready 17 to 24 days after silks first appear: silks dry and turn brown, and a punctured kernel releases a milky liquid.
