Wild Thyme (Thymus serpyllum) is a creeping, evergreen perennial prized for its warm, slightly peppery aroma and the carpet of tiny tubular flowers in white, pink, or lavender (about 4-5 mm long) that cover it from spring into summer. Lower and more spreading than common kitchen thyme, it works beautifully as a fragrant ground cover between stepping stones while its fine leaves still flavour teas, roasts, and Mediterranean dishes.
Sow the very tiny seeds thinly on the surface of moist seed compost; they need light, so leave them uncovered or barely dust with mix (0.5 cm or less). Keep the medium at 15-21 C; germination is slow, around two to three weeks. In Egypt, sow from late September to November for the best results, or start indoors in January-February and transplant out before summer. Give full sun, spacing plants 15-30 cm apart in light, well-drained soil at a roughly neutral to alkaline pH (6.0-8.0).
Thyme is a light feeder and over-feeding weakens its flavour and aromatic oils. A modest compost amendment at planting is usually enough. If plants need a boost, apply only a diluted feed such as fish emulsion in early summer, and avoid rich, high-nitrogen fertilisers.
Water just enough to keep seedlings establishing, then let the soil dry between waterings, since damp soil invites root rot. Ensure good drainage and airflow, especially in the humid Delta. Watch for aphids and spider mites, and harvest sprigs just before flowering, cutting back to about 10-12 cm above the ground.
