Purslane Seeds

Common Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) is a low, sprawling succulent prized for its plump, paddle-shaped leaves and crisp reddish stems. The flavour is bright and tangy with a lemony, slightly peppery edge, and the texture stays juicy and crunchy. It is a long-loved green in Egyptian kitchens, eaten raw in fresh salads or quickly cooked, and its mat-forming habit makes it both a productive leaf crop and an attractive ground cover.

Planting

Direct-sow outdoors only once frost has passed and the soil is reliably warm, about 15 C or higher. Press the tiny seeds onto the surface and barely cover them, around 6 mm deep, since they need light to sprout. Seedlings appear in roughly 7-10 days at 18-29 C. Thin them to about 10-15 cm apart; plants spread into mats 30-45 cm wide. In Egypt sow from spring through summer, repeating every 2-3 weeks.

Fertilizing

Purslane is not a hungry plant. Work organic compost or well-rotted manure into the bed at planting to settle the seedlings in. For a single-season leaf crop, one feed at the start is usually enough. It responds well to phosphorus, with some nitrogen and potassium, but go easy on nitrogen, which only forces soft, weedy growth.

Care

Give it full sun and warmth above 21 C for strong growth. Though drought-tolerant, even moisture keeps leaves tender and tastiest; avoid waterlogging in well-drained sandy or loamy soil to prevent stem and crown rot. Watch for leafmining sawfly and weevil larvae. Harvest in 6-8 weeks by cutting stems to about 5 cm above the base for repeated regrowth.
