Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis), also known as purple granadilla or the passion flower, is a vigorous tendril-climbing perennial vine prized for its intensely aromatic fruit. The rounded purple fruit holds a jewel-like pulp with a sweet-tart, tropical flavour that is wonderful spooned fresh, blended into juices and cocktails, or drizzled over desserts. The exotic, intricate flowers (زهرة الآلام) make it just as rewarding as an ornamental climber on a sunny wall.
Soak the seeds in tepid water for about 24 hours to soften the hard coat, then sow in seed compost and keep covered at a steady 25 C until seedlings emerge; fresh seed germinates faster than old seed. Grow in full sun, ideally where the vine can climb up into the light. In Egypt, start under cover in late winter and transplant out in early spring (February to April) once temperatures pass 18 C and frost has gone. Space plants about 1.8 to 3 m apart, with roughly 3 to 4.5 m between rows on a trellis.
Feed with a high-potassium NPK such as 8-3-9. In the first two months apply about 115 g per vine every 4 weeks; months 3 to 7 about 170 g every 4 weeks; months 8 to 12 about 285 g every 6 weeks; and from year two about 455 g every 6 weeks, with added micronutrients (Mg, S, B, Mn, Cu, Zn, Fe). For home gardens, a high-potassium liquid feed every 4 to 6 weeks through the growing season (March to October) works well, with no feeding in winter dormancy.
Train the vine onto a trellis, fence, arbour or wires so the tendrils have continuous support. Apply small, frequent irrigation to keep the soil consistently moist but never saturated; buds may drop if it dries out, while waterlogging risks root rot. Best growth is at 18 to 30 C; spells above 32 C reduce flowering, so give afternoon shade, heavy mulch and steady water through Egypt's peak heat. Protect from frost below 10 C. Fruit ripens about 70 to 75 days after flowering, drops to the ground, then the skin wrinkles. Watch for caterpillars, stink bugs, spider mites, aphids and whitefly, plus fusarium, phytophthora and woodiness virus; good air circulation helps.
