Dwarf Sunflower Seeds give you all the cheer of a classic sunflower in a neat, compact package. Instead of towering stalks, this variety stays low and bushy with strong, sturdy stems crowned by bright golden-yellow blooms and warm dark centres. Its short, well-behaved habit makes it a favourite for pots, balcony containers, border edges and small sunny gardens, where the sunny faces turn to follow the light and bring a fresh, ornamental glow to any corner.

Planting

Sow your seeds directly outdoors only once all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to above roughly 10 C, since these warm-season annuals will not germinate well in cold soil. Plant each seed about 2.5 cm deep — keep to the shallower end, around 1 to 2 cm, for this smaller dwarf type. Choose a full-sun position that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight a day, in well-drained soil with a mildly acidic to slightly alkaline pH of roughly 6.0 to 7.5. As a small to medium variety, space the plants about 15 cm apart, with rows around 60 to 90 cm apart. Under good conditions the seeds sprout within about 7 to 10 days, and because sunflowers dislike root disturbance it is best to sow where they are to grow; if you do start them indoors, use biodegradable pots, transplant carefully, and harden the young plants off first. In Egypt the ideal window is late winter to early spring: in the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt sow from about mid-February through April so flowering lands in late spring to early summer, ahead of the harshest July and August heat. A second sowing from late August into September gives autumn blooms as the weather eases, while in warmer Upper Egypt it is better to shift sowing earlier, to roughly February or March, and avoid mid-summer planting.

Fertilizing

Start with moderately fertile, humus-rich soil that has been enriched with organic matter such as composted manure. Once the plants have several true leaves — after the second set of leaves appears — apply a slow-release all-purpose fertilizer. Feed only sparingly: too much nitrogen pushes overly vigorous growth, abnormal flower shapes and weak stems that break easily. For larger plantings, splitting the nitrogen helps, with half given at planting and the rest later. If you are growing these dwarf sunflowers in containers or purely for their blooms, a potassium-rich, high-potash tomato-type fertilizer applied per the pack instructions supports good flowering.

Care

Sunflowers want roughly 2.5 cm of water per week, but across Egypt's heat you will usually need to water more generously, as high temperatures push water demand well above that temperate baseline. Water regularly and freely during early growth and around flowering, and never let the plants dry out at those stages; once established, water deeply but less often to encourage deep roots, while container plants may need daily watering in hot weather. Thin the seedlings to their proper spacing as soon as they emerge, and give wind support where needed, since the Delta and desert margins can be breezy. Watch for birds and deer feeding on seeds and plants, plus aphids, stink bugs, leaf-footed bugs and caterpillars, and protect tender young seedlings from slugs and snails. These sunflowers have relatively few serious diseases, though fungal issues such as Alternaria and Phoma leaf spot, rust, white mould, Rhizopus head rot, and downy and powdery mildew can occur. Most varieties reach maturity in about 85 to 95 days, with flowers from mid-summer into autumn; if you want to save seed, harvest once the back of the seed head turns from green to yellow then brown and the back petals drop.
