Sweet Bell Pepper Seeds

The Sweet Bell Pepper (Capsicum annuum) is the cool, mild member of the pepper family — no heat, just clean sweetness and a satisfying crunch. Its blocky, thick-walled fruits start out glossy green and full-sized, then ripen on the plant to vivid red, yellow or orange, growing noticeably sweeter the longer they are left to colour up. That mild flavour and crisp, juicy flesh make it a kitchen all-rounder: wonderful raw in salads, classic for stuffing, and rich and sweet when roasted. The bright, colourful fruits also make the plant an attractive, decorative addition to any home garden or balcony.

Planting

This is a warm-season crop, so give the seeds a head start indoors about 8 weeks before you plan to transplant them outside. Sow them roughly 0.6 cm deep in a sterile seed-starting mix. Warmth is everything for germination: aim for a soil temperature of 27-32°C, where seeds usually sprout in about 7-10 days; in cooler soil they come up very slowly. Once the seedlings have their first true leaves, prick them out to about 5-7.5 cm apart. Move them outdoors only after all frost has passed, when nighttime lows stay above 10°C and the soil has warmed to around 18°C. Set the plants about 30-46 cm apart, in rows roughly 61-91 cm apart, in a spot with full sun. Peppers do best above 15°C, while temperatures over 30°C reduce fruit set and cool nights below 10-13°C slow them down.

Fertilizing

Go easy on nitrogen — too much produces bushy, leafy plants that set little fruit. At transplant time, water the seedlings in with a high-phosphorus starter solution to settle them. Once the first flush of peppers has set, give the plants a supplemental side-dressing, adding phosphorus and potassium according to a soil test. For peppers grown in containers, switch to a high-potassium liquid feed once flowering begins and apply it weekly.

Care

Keep the soil evenly moist — inconsistent watering is the main cause of flower and bud drop and of blossom-end rot. Provide about 2.5 cm of water per week when rain falls short, ideally through drip irrigation rather than overhead watering. Watch for common pests such as aphids, cutworms, tomato hornworms, tarnished plant bugs and flea beetles, and for diseases like bacterial spot, Phytophthora and mosaic viruses; blossom-end rot and sunscald are physiological disorders to look out for too. Harvest green peppers when they are about 8-10 cm long, firm, glossy and full-sized, or leave them on the plant longer to ripen to red, yellow or orange for a sweeter flavour. Pick the first fruits promptly with shears to encourage more to set. Maturity runs roughly 60-90 days from transplant, depending on the variety.

Egypt growing notes: Peppers are frost-sensitive and need soil above about 18°C to transplant, with air temperatures of 15-30°C for the best fruit set; above 30°C and on hot dry winds the flowers drop. In the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt, start seed in a nursery or greenhouse in January-February and transplant in March-April once frost risk has gone, for a late-spring to early-summer harvest before peak heat. For a fall (\"Nili\") crop, sow in July-August and transplant in late August-September to harvest in the cooler autumn months. In the North Delta, simple low tunnels or greenhouses let you transplant in autumn and crop right through the mild winter. In warmer Upper Egypt (Assiut, Sohag, Aswan), shift spring planting earlier — transplant in February-March — and favour the autumn and winter slots, since mid-summer temperatures routinely exceed 35-40°C and will abort the blossoms.
