Ornamental pepper (Capsicum annuum) is grown for show as much as for the kitchen. On a tidy, bushy and compact plant it carries clusters of small, upright fruit that shift through striking colours — often purple, cream, yellow and orange before finishing fiery red — so a single plant displays several shades at once. The glossy little peppers stand proud above the foliage rather than hanging, making it a favourite for patio pots, border edging and sunny windowsills, while the fruit itself is edible and usually fiercely hot. It is a distinctly decorative member of the pepper family, prized for its long-lasting colour and neat habit rather than for large mild fruit like a bell pepper.

Planting

This is a warm-season plant, so start it indoors from seed about 8 weeks before you plan to move the seedlings outdoors. Sow the seeds roughly 0.6 cm deep in a sterile seed-starting mix. Warmth is the key to germination: keep the mix at about 27-32°C, where seeds sprout in around 7-10 days; in cooler soil they come up very slowly, and they need at least 18-21°C to germinate at all. Once true leaves appear, thin or prick out the seedlings to about 5-7.5 cm apart. Transplant outdoors only after all frost has passed, once nighttime lows stay above 10°C and the soil has warmed to about 18°C. Give plants a position in full sun and space them about 30-46 cm apart, in rows roughly 61-91 cm apart; compact types can go as close as 30 cm. In Egypt, peppers fit the mild shoulder seasons best: in the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt, start seed in the nursery in January-February and transplant 45-60 day-old seedlings in March-April once frost risk has gone, for harvest from late spring into early summer before the peak heat. A fall ("Nili") crop can be sown in July-August and transplanted in late August-September for harvest through the cooler autumn. In the North Delta, simple low tunnels or greenhouses allow protected production right through the mild winter, and in warmer Upper Egypt it pays to bring spring transplanting earlier (February-March) and to favour the autumn and winter slots, since mid-summer temperatures routinely exceed 35-40°C.

Fertilizing

Go easy on nitrogen — too much produces a bushy, leafy plant with poor fruit set, which costs you the colourful peppers you are growing for. At transplant time, water the seedlings in with a high-phosphorus starter solution to settle them. After the first flush of peppers has set, side-dress with supplemental fertiliser, applying phosphorus and potassium according to a soil test. For plants grown in containers, feed weekly with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser once flowering begins.

Care

Peppers love warmth and full sun, performing best above 15°C; temperatures above 30°C cut fruit set, and night temperatures below 10-13°C slow growth, so place ornamental peppers where they get plenty of light and shelter. Keep the soil evenly moist — give about 2.5 cm of water per week when rain is short, ideally through drip irrigation rather than overhead watering, because inconsistent moisture triggers flower and bud drop as well as blossom-end rot. Watch for common pests such as aphids, cutworms, tomato hornworms, tarnished plant bugs and flea beetles, and stay alert to diseases including bacterial spot, Phytophthora and tobacco/cucumber mosaic virus, plus disorders like blossom-end rot (linked to calcium) and sunscald. The fruit colours up over time: peppers ripen from green through their final shade as they mature, roughly 60-90 days from transplant depending on variety, and picking the first fruits promptly with shears encourages the plant to keep setting more of its bright display.
