Mint Seeds 10g

Shami spearmint is the classic Egyptian green mint that perfumes every cup of tea. Its leaves are bright green, soft, and crinkled, carrying a sweet, cooling aroma and a refreshing flavour that is rounder and gentler than peppermint, never harsh. The young, soft shoot tips hold the most intense scent of all, which makes this mint a favourite for hot and iced tea, lemonade, tabbouleh, and yoghurt dips. A hardy perennial, it spreads eagerly and keeps producing fragrant leaves from spring well into autumn.

Planting

Start the seed indoors in spring, roughly 6 to 8 weeks before your planting-out date, and move seedlings outside once the danger of frost has passed. Surface-sow: press the seed gently onto the surface of the growing medium and do not cover it, because mint seed needs light to germinate. Keep the medium moist and well lit, and expect germination in about 10 to 14 days at 22 to 24 C (around two weeks at roughly 20 C). In Egypt the best establishment windows are autumn (September to November) and late winter to early spring (February to March); avoid planting into the peak summer heat of June to August. Space plants about 45 cm apart, as mature plants reach roughly 45 to 90 cm tall and spread aggressively by underground runners. Worth knowing: mint is more commonly and reliably propagated vegetatively, by dividing a mature clump or rooting stem and runner cuttings, than from seed.

Fertilizing

Mint loves rich soil that is high in organic matter, so dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the bed before planting to feed the plants and improve drainage. Aim for a soil pH of 6.0 to 6.5. In well-amended ground the plant may need no extra feeding at all. Where you do feed, apply nitrogen from spring to early summer to match the burst of active growth. Go easy: excess nitrogen produces soft, weak growth that draws in spider mites and aphids and can make disease worse.

Care

Mint thrives in full sun to partial shade, needing at least 4 to 6 hours of sun a day; it is most productive in full sun but tolerates light shade. In warmer Upper Egypt, give it partial or afternoon shade through the hot months. Keep the root zone consistently moist but never waterlogged, and don't let the plants wilt between waterings. Water the soil directly rather than the leaves to cut down on leaf disease, water deeply instead of frequent light sprinkles, and favour drip irrigation over overhead sprinklers, especially through Egypt's hot summers. Watch for mint rust, aphids, spider mites (worse in hot, dry weather and with too much nitrogen), blue mint beetle, mint moth, and leafhoppers; verticillium wilt is a serious soil-borne disease, so always start with healthy, disease-free stock. Dislodge aphids and mites with a strong jet of water or insecticidal soap. Harvest individual leaves or shoot tips once plants are established, picking the young soft tips for the strongest flavour; for drying or the strongest oil, cut the whole plant just as the flower buds start to appear. Remove flower spikes to keep the leaves flavourful, and cut the plant back hard, to about 5 cm from the base, after flowering to bring on fresh new growth. Frequent cutting keeps the plant bushy, and the harvest runs from late spring through autumn. Divide established clumps every 3 to 4 years to keep them vigorous.
