Thai basil is the aromatic cousin of sweet basil, prized for its bold anise-and-licorice flavour that holds up beautifully in hot dishes. It carries narrow, pointed, glossy green leaves on striking purple stems, and its sturdy, slightly spicy aroma makes it the signature herb of Thai, Vietnamese and other Southeast Asian cooking, from stir-fries and curries to noodle bowls and fresh garnishes. Its compact, decorative habit also makes it an attractive choice on a sunny windowsill or balcony.

Planting

This is a warm-season annual that is sensitive to frost, so timing matters. You can start seed indoors about 6 to 8 weeks before the last spring frost, or sow and transplant outdoors only once all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed, waiting until nighttime temperatures stay consistently above 10 C. Cover the seed lightly, roughly 0.6 cm deep. Germination usually takes about 5 to 10 days and is best at a soil temperature of around 18 to 21 C (it also germinates well near 20 C). Thin or transplant seedlings once they have two to three pairs of true leaves, setting full-size plants about 15 to 30 cm apart; for cut-leaf production you can grow them closer, around 10 to 20 cm apart, with direct-sown rows about 45 cm apart. Indoor-started seedlings go out about 6 weeks after sowing, once frost danger has passed. Give the plants full sun, at least 6 to 8 hours of bright light a day in a warm, sheltered spot.

Fertilizing

A low-nitrogen starter feed works well before planting, such as a 5-10-5 or 5-10-10 blend applied at planting. If growth slows about two months after planting, side-dress with a nitrogen feed such as roughly 0.1 to 0.2 kg of calcium nitrate per row section. Plants in containers do well with a diluted balanced liquid feed every 3 to 6 weeks, ideally an organic-based balanced feed while avoiding high-potassium products. Bear in mind that basil grown in good ground soil often needs no extra fertilizer at all.

Care

Basil is not drought tolerant and needs a fairly constant supply of soil moisture, so keep the soil evenly moist. Water deeply about every 7 to 10 days, and more often for plants in containers. Watering at the base in the morning, rather than wetting the foliage, helps reduce disease. Pinch the terminal shoot tips regularly, at least once a week, to keep growth bushy, and pinch out flower buds as they appear, since flowering makes the plant woody and turns the leaves more bitter while reducing yield. Watch for common problems including downy mildew, Fusarium wilt, gray mould, bacterial leaf spot, damping-off and root rots, along with pests such as aphids, slugs and snails, spider mites, whiteflies, Japanese beetles and leafhoppers. Start picking young leaves as you need them, and for the best flavour harvest just before flowering in the cool early morning. For a full cut, take the plant back to about 10 to 15 cm above the ground to encourage fresh regrowth.

Growing in Egypt

Because Thai basil is frost-tender, the real constraint in Egypt is cold nights below about 10 C rather than summer heat. In the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt, start seed under protection or in a seedbed in late January to February, then transplant outdoors in March to April once nights are reliably above 10 C, giving a long cutting season from June into October; avoid sowing into the cold of mid-winter. In the warmer Upper Egypt, the frost-free window is wider, so transplanting can begin a few weeks earlier, from late February into March, and a second autumn crop is possible. During the hottest summer weeks provide steady moisture and some afternoon relief. Egypt's spring naturally hits the ideal 18 to 21 C germination range, while peak summer is the main harvest period before flowering.
