Passion Flower Seeds

The passion flower (Passiflora) is a tendril-climbing perennial vine famous for its intricate, almost otherworldly blooms and its aromatic, tangy-sweet fruit. Known in Egypt as "باشن فروت" and also as the passion flower or زهرة الآلام, it sends out grasping tendrils that scramble up any vertical support, draping fences and arbours in lush green and exotic colour. The ripe fruit turns deep purple or yellow and is loved fresh, juiced or as a fragrant topping for desserts, while the vine itself is a striking ornamental for sunny walls and pergolas.

Planting

Soak the seeds in tepid water for about 24 hours to soften the hard coat, then sow in seed compost and keep covered at a steady 25 C until seedlings appear; fresh seed sprouts faster than old seed. Grow in full sun where the vine can climb into the light. On a trellis, space plants roughly 1.8-3 m apart and leave about 3-4.5 m between rows.

Fertilizing

Feed with a high-potassium feed through the growing season (about March-October), every 4-6 weeks, and stop feeding during winter dormancy. In the field, a high-potassium NPK such as 8-3-9 is applied on a rising schedule as the vine matures, alongside magnesium, sulphur and trace elements.

Care

Train the vine onto a trellis, fence or arbour with horizontal support wires. Water little and often to keep the soil moist but never waterlogged, easing off in winter; buds may drop if the roots dry out. Best growth is at 18-30 C, with heat above 32 C reducing fruit set. Watch for aphids, spider mites, caterpillars and whitefly, and avoid waterlogging to prevent root rots. Fruit ripens about 70-75 days after flowering and drops when ready.
